A new state-of-the-art technology building has just opened at the University of Northampton.

The Newton building is an £11m re-development of a Grade II listed building formerly known as Kingsley Park.

It was opened by HRH Princess Anne who is the Royal Patron of the Women Into Science and Engineering (WISE) campaign.

It is hoped that the new facilities will attract more women into Science.

The Dean of the School of Science and Technology, Professor Kamal Bechkoum said: “There is a national gender imbalance in engineering in science.

“Part of our commitment to address this is to encourage more girls into enginering.”

The building also houses the Nvision centre which was opened earlier in 2010 and specialises in 3D technology.

The redevelopment of the building was funded by the Higher Education Council, Northamptonshire Enterprise Limited, East Midlands Development Agency and The European Regional Development Fund.

The space was designed by local firm GSSArchitecture with an aim to create a space for businesses and students to work together.
