APPLICATIONS - OVERVIEW
Virtalis has been instrumental in broadening the use of visualisation to cover a wide range of market sectors and people who work within them. Our applications have been proved to be incredibly successful over the decades we’ve been trailblazing VR technology.
Nowadays, people are increasingly focussing on end-to-end processes, such as Product Lifecycle Management (PLM), Building Information Modelling (BIM) and Asset Management. VR is an ideal tool for these interrelated disciplines, not only because it delivers an easy-to-understand global view of an entire operation, but also because the same 3D data can be deployed in different ways, whether it is for design, safety or training. At Virtalis, we operate across multiple sectors, and with organisations of all shapes and sizes, giving us an understanding of a myriad of different commercial roles. We’re happy to work with you to develop efficient solutions that best fits your organisation, becomes integral to your method of working and reduces risk.

Virtalis creates turnkey VR systems that provide seamless CAD integration to help businesses radically improve their design processes. Virtalis’ systems and services reduce design errors, foster understanding and communication, reduce or eliminate physical prototypes and, above all, reduce risk.
We were the first company to come up with the collaborative solution for product designers who are located in different buildings or even on different continents and yet are all working on the same project. Communication is faster, decisions are more informed and are more easily intelligible to all stakeholders.
We have installed more design-orientated advanced visualisation systems than anyone else. Virtalis can give you the best independent advice so you get a system that best meets your needs and budget, whilst remaining scalable and easily upgradable.
“Costly design mistakes simply don’t happen with VR .This is engineering design at its purest, enabling us to reduce both time-to-market and unit cost.” Ian Davies, TCE’s Engineering Manager.
Better understanding and communication lead to more efficient manufacturing. This is exactly what VR does, as companies like BAE, Leyland Truck and Rolls Royce attest.
Operations teams can review virtual prototypes to highlight manufacturing issues earlier, to better understand the human factors implications and to be able to train production line staff to get it right first time. This improves product build quality and reduces errors and levels of rework. It also reduces end-user issues and warranty claims.
Our customers often describe their Virtalis VR system as a communication hub, where barriers are broken down and everyone is able to interact and speak the same language; whether they are management, production line workers, designers, marketers or accountants.
“The VR models give you a very real sense of the boat from the inside. People can literally drop in and walk through the exact area they are building.” Dean Brown, Dimensional Control Inspector, BAE SYSTEMS Submarine Solutions
Virtalis VR has radically improved maintenance procedures and training for maintenance in both industry and in the defence sector, saving time and money and increasing safety.
Our customers often describe their Virtalis VR system as a communication hub, where barriers are broken down and everyone is able to interact and speak the same language. This is never truer than in this area.
Maintenance courses can be taught in VR enabled lecture theatres, which allow the inclusion of 3D content. Taken a step further, students can interact with the virtual environment via a fully tracked Head Mounted Display, even interacting with colleagues’ avatars. Haptics and sounds can be added to increase the level of immersion, making maintenance highly realistic and perfect for rehearsing procedures in hazardous environments, like nuclear power plants.
“Our new VR training is easy to tailor for different audiences. An illustration is the 3D Inspection of an Underground Regulator Station Course; it can be delivered to specialists, or can be delivered in a different way to non technical staff as an introduction to natural gas.” Ed Ruszkowski, Regional Manager for Gas Learning & Development at National Grid
Virtual training enables risks to students and equipment to be completely eliminated. Add tracking, sound and possibly virtual touch (haptics) too and information becomes assimilated easily through life-like experience.
We have numerous customers who routinely use VR for training their staff. The British Armed Forces use Virtalis’ Helicopter Crew Reality trainer, seen worldwide to be the blue riband of helicopter crew training.
Recent years have seen a trend for VR training within manufacturing and maintenance. National Grid is typical – the diversity and complexity of their equipment formerly made it impossible for trainees to experience every equipment variant and train for every possible fault without exposing themselves to danger. Now they are able to simulate and encounter all potential faults in a completely safe and repeatable interactive 3D environment – courtesy of Virtalis
British universities were among the first to deploy Virtalis VR and we have installations spanning the globe from and in use for subjects as diverse as Astronomy and Veterinary Science. We can “VR enable” lecture theatres, like we’ve done at South Bank University, or we can supply stand-alone VR trainers, such as the Haptic Cow and Haptic Horse.
“VR is enabling us to do and see things that we can’t in real life. The modules we’ve commissioned feature additional pedagogical benefits that go beyond classroom training and even hands-on training because, in the virtual world, our cabinets have current running through them, making all the sounds and reacting all the way you’d expect in real life.” Schneider Electric Technical Institute director, Stephan Pradal
VR is an extremely powerful tool for research, helping academics, scientists and students do their jobs more efficiently and effectively, thanks to its power as a communication tool.
Virtalis has worked with many of the world’s leading research and academic bodies. Our technology can be harnessed to a wide number of applications within education and research, as our range of case studies demonstrates.
Some of the most intriguing are in the sphere of psychological research, as virtual worlds can be created that give reliable repeatability without any variation, enabling the researchers to focus solely of the reactions of their subjects.
“People are rather blasé when I introduce the VR system, but I wait for the inevitable gasps that follow as they see its power.” Dr. James Hinton, Professor, University of Arkansas.
Clients repeatedly tell us that the deep understanding our systems bring is truly transformational to their marketing efforts. The queues at their exhibition booths and the audible “wow” provide clear evidence of this. They have also proved to be invaluable for market research and focus group exercises. Being memorable and being seen as innovative are good for differentiating you in your market and adding value to your reputation and brand.
The wow factor is down to the software and the systems we supply. We can work with just about any data from major CAD packages to specialist niche providers. Our developers have created software bridges that maintain the fidelity of your existing data, but render it smoothly in 3D. It is as simple as that once you add the key elements of Virtalis know-how and experience.
“At Power-Gen India and Hannover Fair, the response was so intense that even after six presentations, there were still people queuing to see our power plants in 3D. Our research has shown that the use of VR is good for our brand and people remember our presentations more than those of our competitors.” Nicolas Gutron, Change & Communications – Multimedia Co-ordinator, Alstom Power System.
