GeoVisionary to Take the IGC by Storm

Users interact with multi-source data in real-time using GeoVisionary

The 33rd International Geological Congress in Oslo will give the global community of geologists a sneak preview of GeoVisionary. The truly groundbreaking 3D landscape visualising software was developed jointly by Virtalis and the British Geological Survey (BGS) and is due to be formally launched in London later this year.

GeoVisionary enables the visualisation of terabytes of geoscience data, and allows other data, such as geotechnical, environmental and geochemical information to be overlaid onto it, giving a complete picture. The visualisation can be done at desktop level or in a large-scale collaborative projection environment with full stereoscopic 3D and immersive/interactive options. At the GeoExpo 2008, BGS’s Stand C02-16 will show GeoVisionary on a laptop to give visitors a 3D view of the landscape.

GeoVisionary has been designed in such an open way that it is not limited to the British shores or BGS data. BGS has already used the application to validate and plan projects internationally and it has also gathered planetary data, such as that freely provided by NASA, and investigated how best to view and interpret such data. Colm Jordan, head of the Earth Observation Team at BGS, remarked: "GeoVisionary is a huge leap in geoscience visualisation technology”.

The BGS team demonstrating GeoVisionary will be headed up by Stuart Marsh, head of Spatial Geoscience Technologies at BGS. He commented: “What began as a simple project to develop a 3D field reconnaissance tool for BGS geologists has burgeoned into something far more significant. We are really proud of what we have achieved jointly with Virtalis and can’t wait to gauge the reaction of geoscience colleagues from around the world. The potential applications for GeoVisionary are many and varied, extending far beyond geology. With our colleagues from Virtalis we have got a big and exciting challenge ahead to maximise its potential”.

Visitors who wish to see live demonstrations of GeoVisionary are welcome to meet Stuart Marsh or Colm Jordan on the mornings of 7th, 9th or 11th August at BGS’s Stand: C02-16.
