Virtalis & InterSense Deliver IS900 Motion Tracking System for BAE Systems Typhoon Cockpit Rig

Custom configuration optimises tracking performance, ensuring all system components are out of pilot sight

BAE Systems Active Cockpit Rig (ACR)VIRTALIS, the European leading VR Company, has just installed a custom configured, InterSense, IS-900 motion tracking system in BAE Systems Active Cockpit Rig (ACR) which was developed for Typhoon pilots. The hybrid inertial-acoustic IS-900 system is coupled with an area-of-interest eye-tracking system, ensuring that the BAE Systems configuration delivers real-time tracking of head position and orientation, as well as monitoring the movement of the pilot's eyes.

The high-resolution 9m dome Outside World (OSW) facility is located at BAE Systems Warton site. The IS-900 system is configured to ensure all components are out of the pilot's Field of Regard (FoR), in order to decrease the risk of negative impact on the realism of the simulated visual scene. Furthermore, the IS-900 system provides highly accurate tracking, with no noticeable jitter or latency, offering hand and object tracking for the most demanding 3D applications.

BAE Systems Active Cockpit Rig (ACR) "Custom configuration of tracking systems is becoming more and more critical as training simulators must meet the wide range of new specifications in training protocols to ensure that training sessions properly prepare pilots for real-world missions" stated Mike Donfrancesco, vice president of sales at InterSense. "We're pleased to continue to serve the EU marketplace with custom solutions, such as this installation for BAE, and look forward to developing new opportunities for the integration of our technology in additional European training programmes."

"Thanks to InterSense's advanced tracking system we were able to formulate the ideal solution to help us meet our customer's training objectives," said Andrew Connell, technical director, Virtalis. "We are proud to have been able to provide BAE with the exact configuration needed for their fixed-wing aircraft simulator."
