BAE SYSTEMS Submarines, helped by Virtalis, the advanced visualisation specialists, is currently deploying advanced visualisation facilities for the manufacture of the Astute Class of submarine in Barrow-in-Furness, England. It is thought that this is the very first “manufacturing floor” use of Stereo VR. Just as unusual is the fact that the cabin-based systems are being operated, not by the IT department, but by people whose main role is building the submarine. |

3D System Helps Geologists to Develop Interpretations and Test Hypotheses
LAST YEAR, the British Geological Survey (BGS) installed a Virtalis StereoWorks visualisation system at its Keyworth HQ. Following the success of that system, an almost identical one has been installed at BGS, Edinburgh, enabling geologists based there to explore their geological data in full stereo 3D. |

HOT ON the heels of the completion of the world’s only virtual Winching Simulator, part of its established Voice Marshalling Simulator, Virtalis is now collaborating with Heli-Basket manufacturer, Precision Lift Inc. With training time in a Blackhawk helicopter currently exceeding $2,000 per flying hour and the same time in a Chinook $6,000, military organisations are forced to consider their training budget extremely carefully. The RAF has found the solution to cost and risk barriers in helicopter rear-crew training, which has proved to be a Virtual Reality (VR) training system developed and marketed by Virtalis. |

VIRTALIS, the virtual defence training specialist company, has been appointed by VEGA Group PLC (VEGA) to support its contract for the creation of the First of Class training material for the Royal Navy’s new Type 45 Anti Air Warfare Destroyer. All the training courses being developed by VEGA will feature a VR element, courtesy of Virtalis, especially the Executive Acquaint and the Warship Familiarisation Courses. They will be available as both computer-based training for private study and as computer-aided instruction for lecturers to present to groups of Naval personnel. When complete, the courses will be shared across the MoD’s training network, allowing Royal Navy trainers to develop their own courses from the core material. Using their own kRender software, Virtalis will be developing a 3D virtual tour of the whole ship, from pre-existing digital designs, and a detailed 3D virtual model of critical areas with interactive features for both familiarisation and job training. |

VIRTALIS, Europe’s leading advanced visualisation company, has designed and installed a VR projection system at The School of the Built Environment at Northumbria University.Prof. David Fleming, dean at the School, explained: “This passive stereo projection system is highly complex, but its interface is very simple. This facet was very important to us when we were deciding what we wanted last year. Our system has a wireless control panel and it links together the different hardware seamlessly, removing the technological barrier we might otherwise encounter. We intend to have a long-term relationship with Virtalis. As recognised experts, we will look to them to keep both our knowledge and our facility up to scratch.” |
